Name
Stranger things – interdimensional wormholes, emergencies and mental health
Date & Time
Friday, August 14, 2026, 2:20 PM - 3:00 PM
Dr Rina Bruinsma
Description

Rina will share reflections of her journey from Commonwealth emergency management, including her focus on building mental health and wellbeing before, during and after disasters, to the realities of working on the ground through recent cyclone and flood events here in the Territory, as CEO of community-based mental health organisation, TeamHEALTH.

In her Commonwealth role, Rina would speak regularly about understanding disaster risk and being prepared (both physically and mentally) for disasters but – as new resident of Darwin – found herself scouring the shelves for a flashlight days before Cyclone Fina.

She found the last one on the shelf – a collectable Stranger Things flashlight with a special UV light to reveal the secrets of the Upside Down. Her presentation will use this as an analogy for seeing things from different perspectives, being mentally ready for climate-related disasters and how making a values-driven career change can lead to owning the coolest flashlight in the NT.
