In the remote Aboriginal community of Maningrida, the Manayangkarirra Primary Health Clinic piloted an innovative afterhours model of care. Guided by strong community consultation and cultural safety, permanent afterhours staffing was introduced to provide phone advice, first aid guidance and in-person care beyond normal clinic hours. This 24-hour service addresses longstanding barriers created by emergency only afterhours services, enabling earlier assessment and timely intervention. Two years on, the model has reduced medical evacuations, improved health outcomes, increased community satisfaction and strengthened workforce retention. This presentation highlights the value of flexible, appropriately funded, community designed solutions for improving access to care in remote Australia.
