The professional standards for practice set by the nursing and midwifery board of australia (nmba) have long shaped curricula. yet their real‑world value in contemporary practice; particularly in regional and remote settings, deserves critical examination. this presentation asks whether one set of standards can genuinely meet the needs of all australians, including individuals living with complex needs in primary care. by exploring how the standards guide, constrain, and sometimes misalign with everyday practice, the session highlights where they have become stagnated and where education must evolve beyond compliance. it argues that while nmba standards provide essential foundations, they cannot alone prepare graduates for the realities of cultural diversity, system complexity, digital technologies, and geographically dispersed care. participants will be invited to consider a future model of nursing and midwifery education that is responsive, context‑driven, and designed for the health system australia actually has.
